Originally from Australia, Nikki Fletcher is part of the Worship Central team based at Holy Trinity Brompton, London, working alongside Tim Hughes, Al Gordon, Ben Cantelon and others. She has featured on many worship albums and her songs, such as ‘Glorious Redeemer’ and ‘All Glory’, have been sung in churches around the world. She recently released her first album, All Glory, with Kingsway. Claire Musters talked songwriting, team dynamics and juggling ministry with motherhood with her.

You come from Australia – what brought you over to England?
My husband and I relocated to London four years ago now. It’s not something we had planned for years; it all happened quite quickly. We were established in what we were doing in Sydney and also loved living there, but we felt a real strong sense that God was calling us on. To cut a long story short, lots of relationships and doors opened in the UK so we sold all our stuff, bought a one-way ticket and turned up in London ready for the next chapter in our lives.

How long have you been involved in worship leading/writing songs for the church?
I started leading worship when I was about 18. I was already pursuing a career in music as a singer and songwriter, but my youth leader persuaded me to lead worship at a youth event and then it all kind of spiralled from there. For a few years I wrestled with the calling to use my gifts to serve the church (I desperately wanted to have a career in the music industry) but God has made it abundantly clear for years now that this is what I am meant to be giving myself to.

You have been part of the Worship Central team for a while now. As a female worship leader surrounded by male musicians I have to ask what it feels like to be one of the few female members of the team? Do you ever encounter those highly charged (somewhat smelly!) testosterone moments when the men are all trying to outdo each other (let’s face it – worship leaders are not always serious and Tim and Al are renowned pranksters!
Firstly, I love being part of the Worship Central team. It’s a real privilege and we have so much fun together; we are all great friends. I do at times feel like I am surrounded by a big crazy boys club! BUT I have always felt a bit of that on every team I’ve served on, as I have mainly worked for and with men (boys!). I do love the dynamic of energy, confidence and silliness of a room full of boys. However, sometimes I find I struggle to be confident in the unique voice that God has given me. I am growing in this and learning to be authentic in bringing what He gives me and not to worry or get discouraged if it doesn’t fit. God’s given us all a voice and I think we have to find and develop it.

Relationship is key to team so how does that work out practically when most of your colleagues are male?
Relationally it all works very well. I genuinely am very good friends with the guys I work with, and I am also very good friends with their wives. I don’t think being female hinders me, in fact I think it can be a real advantage. For example being a female can bring a different emotional and spiritual perspective. I have been married for a long time (over 10 years!) and I have a son, and another son on the way (maybe God built me to work with guys?) so I have learnt a lot through that about how to communicate well with men – they usually aren’t as complicated as we girls are!
