"CCLI performs a great service: eliminating the hassle of copyright clearance that would otherwise be an impossible job for churches. As a worship leader, it is so nice to have a huge catalogue of worship songs to pick from and not worry about whether I can obtain permission to use them."
~ Kelly Carpenter - Songwriter, Worship Leader

Glossary

Definitions of terms we commonly use:

Administrator The individual or organisation that administers the song. The administrator is responsible for protecting the song rights, for administering usage of the song, and for distributing royalties for that use to the song owner. The administrator will usually be established on a territory by territory basis. Royalties are paid to the administrator, not the song owner (although in some cases, they may be the one and the same.) E.g., in the case of "© 2006 Grace Music, administered by Smiling Uncle Music", the administrator is "Smiling Uncle Music".
Authorised Song A song covered by the CCL and/or MRL. An Authorised Song is one which is included in an Authorised Catalogue and can therefore be reproduced (CCL) or photocopied (MRL) under the respective terms of these licences.

Catalogue

Authorised Catalogue

A catalogue is a collection of songs administered by a song owner or administrator. An Authorised Catalogue is one which the copyright owner has agreed can be included in the CCLI licensing programme. You can determine if a song is covered by your licence by whether or not the catalogue to which it belongs is included in the Authorised Catalogue list. A song's catalogue information can usually be found with the copyright details on published words and/or music. For example, PlayItLoudMusic is the name of the catalogue in the following copyright line:

Words & Music by Billy Bloggs, © 2007 PlayItLoudMusic.

In order to see if Billy Bloggs' song is authorised, you would need to find out if PlayItLoudMusic is listed in the appropriate catalogue list (CCL or MRL). The advantage of working by catalogue is that as soon as new songs are added to an Authorised Catalogue they are automatically included in the licensing programme.

Licence Period The period of one year between the licence start date and its expiry.  Nearly all our licences are annually renewable and if you hold more than one, they will share the same expiry date.   Therefore, some licences are purchased on a pro-rated basis to tie in the expiry date of the new licence with that of existing licences.  In this case, the licence period will initially be less than one year.
Publisher Sometimes interchangeably used with Administrator, but strictly speaking, a Publisher is the publisher of a book or other media.
Regions CCLI is organised into the following Regions:
  • Africa, which contains the following territory:
    • Africa, which covers Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.
  • Asia-Pacific, which contains the following territories:
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
  • Europe, which contains the following territories:
    • Denmark
    • Ireland
    • Faroe Islands
    • Finland
    • Germany
    • Iceland
    • Netherlands
    • Norway
    • Sweden
  • North America, which contains the following territories:

    • United States
Report period As songs are reported by churches and organisations, we have a processing cycle, where we review and audit those reports. This is to ensure the correct songs have gone into our systems, and to ensure the copyright owners are paid their royalties correctly. Every six months, at the end of that cycle, or report period, we pay royalties to the song owners, and produce reports for them on the song reproductions. For more details, see Royalty Process.
Song owner See Catalogue.
Territory An area where a particular set of copyright laws apply. CCLI has to have a separate set of legal agreements with the copyright owners of each territory. So far "territory" could be used interchangeably with "country", except for the Africa territory, which includes Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.
Unverified song A song for which we don't have any / enough copyright information. See Verified song for what is required to verify a song.
Verified song The song has been checked and verified by the song copyright owner as being theirs, and they have provided all of the song copyright information, including song ownership percentages (where the song is owned by more than one catalogue).
